Action: derek loves rsync ? so way use rsync ? what makes it better ? well the nice thing about rsync is you can automate copying of data rsync doesn't keep versions, does it? and it really does a 'diff' so to speak so is rather quick dsmith: no it doesnt do a diff derek: I'm having a hard time parsing that Arturas (~arturas@gsk.vtu.lt) left irc: "Bye :)" Oh wait! I think I actually did make a copy to my laptop last week! whew! Action: Vee2d2 runs to snag said mechanism! but it does a 'diff' on save as far as performance is concerned sorry kids got me dsmith: it only copies things that change but doesnt store them as a 'diff' to simulate that i suggested creating 5 different copies so day1 copy to day1/somestuff day2 copy to day2/somestuff etc etc so you have 'five days worth of archive' then do an 'hourly' that updates hourly (if you so desired) generally i do stuff here nightly or weekly but just keep one copy this is dangerous in that if i dont notice a change that is bad before next sync i lose data Action: derek isnt saying rsync is better than backup tool im saying its cheaper (easier) especially with large chunks of data for example to back up 60 gigs would be pretty darn pricey on DLT a 60gig drive is fairly cheap What I thought. anyhoo rsync is good for keep a remote machine synced up, but you can't go back in time and get something. the other MAJOR advantage is location i can have a machine in memphis and one in arizona and rsync them (at cost of a drive) via ssh/rsync now if memphis gets hit by a disaster and that location is gone i have data in arizona and vice versa the only way to achieve this via other backup methods would be to 'ship' a tape(medium) cross country nightly i know several free software folks that 'play nice' i will give you 10gig space you give me 10gig space kind of arrangement that's cool. that is and now for about 20bucks (assuming $2/gig bandwidth) i have cross country disaster recovery er $2/gig disk not bandwidth "never underestimate the bandwith of a stationwagon full of tapes". Or something like that. sounds like a great backup tool derek ... what wrong with to make you think it isn't a replacement ? wtg: because of what dsmith mentioned you aren't getting true diffs in time so monday i have file X with value Y and i back that up tuesday its value Y and i back that wednesday its value Z and i back that up thursday i notice that its value Z and i want value Y if i go to the back up im going to get valueZ and there is no way for me to get valueY correct me if i'm wrong .. but couldn't you adapt your rolling 5 day plan by changing day1/file to date/file ? havoc backs up his servers by rysyncing to a box at his office unless you take and make multiple syncs of the same data and put them in a rotation wtg: yes that was my point you can achieve a '5 day spread' if you created 5 instances of what you were syncing but it starts to get more expensive disk wise rsync is not an archive tool, it's a syncronization tool. the way they do this on tape medium is you do a FULL backup like once a week (which is costly) but then during the week you only do diffs arr .. disks are less expensive then my time =) and thus they are relatively cheap wtg: well and seriously they are cheaper than backup stuff as tape medium that supports 4 and 5 gigs is EXPENSIVE the medium costs big money and so does the hardware I bought a tape drive about 7 or 8 years ago and never used it.. it's still in a box somewhere. it's only 800M though Probably too small by now. one of the floppy interface things ik thank god for dvd rw =) ... a little pricie now but they'll drop Have you guys ever heard of the way plan9 some "backups"? s/some/does/ nope ?
