<Vee2d2> kreiszner: because the normalized index then becomes part of the sku, it's unpredictable otherwise. One mfg uses 8 digit numbers another some combination of numbers and letters and so on.. so rather than sticking the mfg'rs # into my number I normalize it to give myself a cleaner SKU to work with, not to mention one that's not insanely large.
