Action: alandd thinks he ought to come to LUG meetings! ;^) oy dimas_ (~dimas@195.218.177.46) left irc: Read error: 110 (Connection timed out) oi chillywilly: what it is alandd: so derek does not attend the LUG? dtm: my spamassassin server "crashed" alandd: i'd imagine that if someone was to procure him a body double, he just might make it well probably a double in body and in mind. a veritable 'clone', as it were 133mhz pentium with 48MB RAM running other services too is too much for the poor little box. except also a reasonable facsimile of his memories and personality as they are now known, so actually an entity much more advanced than a mere rapidly aged clone. oic I threw some spam at it and it trashed itself to pieces for a day and a half thrashed alandd: get yourself some RAM at 18004memory.com but go there via pricewatch.com too much for it. I'll have to scale up the hardware or down the software i just bought 128MB of 72pin ram for $23.50 including shipping nice. i assume that's a good price it was used but with testing and a lifetime warranty if i was running a server, i'd run Cerberus first Cerberus? i'm boutta load this baby down with 4 more sticks of 8MB too! wooo http://sf.net/projects/va-ctcs that's cerberus that's VA's old hardware burnin software w3rk 1t b4by hmmm... good for other things too, I bet. testing networks and everything that can be loaded it's a load test scripting platform and it runs on ppc linux too hard drives? ide? scsi? works them out? no docs on the site. yeah does the whole system comprehensively the docs are in the cvs checkout do a checkout as with any other sf.net project and there are tons of docs it's insane. but it can be as simple as you installing the perl and kernel compilation prerequisites, and running './newburn' and come back the next day I could use this at work! Another reason to use Linux! hehe go git um but you wont ever know what can fail your hardware, if you dont test it all comprehensively and concurrently and with statistics etc I work here: http://adtron.com we are pretty proud of our stuff so if it passes cerberus before and after shipping the hardware, it'll likely live through anything under normal circumstances for years yep. alandd: interesting; the author of cerberus is mega huge on storage he now works at Intransa, provider of linux-based iscsi appliances interesting indeed. and of course VA had a little bit of storage too yeah cerberus was used to burn in all aspects including i/o ports and networks, so you could use it to burn in all your storage peripherals and drivers gotta blow everything away at the same time and try to kill it, so you'll know what i'tll do under a normal load for the next N years :) coolio! I'm glad I dropped by, even if derek was already asleep. well you guys certainly have tons of storage so do you focus on linux compatibility for the products? to any degree? it's mostly ATA and SCSI standard. No drivers required. it just works(TM) Action: alandd (TM) somebody... LuftHans: yea? he knows it? dtm: someone we're meeting with tomorrow :) oic Action: alandd bingo! yeah you can write to the author at moby1gnubie@yahoo.com too alandd: he was asking me about it earlier this week and is looking into using it for the new gig would work well there. he doens't still actively maintain it but he's gratified to hear of users and he'll gladly give advice when he has time I'll contact him. we don't compete directly with his company...yet ;^) h0h0 alandd: you'll just have to hire him when you do :) yeah that very well could be if you allow telecommuting for staff that are invaluably brilliant k telecommuting? yes once he experiences the Phx summer, he'll be jumping at the opportunity to move here ;-) that's a big negative ;) :) must sleep. Is it waiting on something from me? the debs work right? And is there any way I can talk you into letting me put the debian directory off of the root of the package? jamest: According to reinhard, yes. jbailey: why? we are trying to keep the root directory clean... much the same reason that reinhard put man/ into doc/ could setup.cvs symlink to it? jcater: Because right now I have to put a symlink in. The debian/ directory isn't supposed to be in the main tarball, but I can't put a symlink in with diff. The other solution is for me to move it just for the packaging, but that doesn't leave you with the Debian package and the upstream CVS being as similar as we've been aiming for. so the symlink doesn't work cvs is leeet why not: cp -l packaging/debian/ debian/ instead of ln -s reinhard has said okay to the debian/ directory being in the root of appserver. =) I just think it's very poor form jcater: cp -l still wouldn't let me represent it in a diff. i guess I can live with a debian if need be but i hoped to keep it clean It's the last barrier to updates at the drop of a hat. i can live with it i guess I still think it's very poor form if setup.cvs can't just adjust it as needed but am too tired to argue so whatever though I don't understand how debian/ in cvs is any less automatable than the other approaches but if you must, then .... jcater: Just that the source code requires chewing before packaging. jcater: Symlinks in the debian/ directory at all won't work. (Diff can't represent them) ? With it like this, whenever someone wants a package, it'll be as simple as going to the root of a freshly unpacked tree and typing 'debuild' (well, assuming they don't mind the version number not being incremented) that's pretty easy as opposed as something as simple as packaging/build-deb ? Action: jcater is playing devil's advocate here setup.py build-deb jcater: Sure, but that's not how anyone makes .debs Noone will know that it's the special gnue way. ah we're special we get to ride the short bus jamest: Like those kids on the yellow bus. =) and before we know it, by that logic, we have ebuild/,install.msi, etc in root directories Or decide that distro packaging shouldn't go in the source code. It's pretty rare to see debian packaging in the upstream code. Reasonably common to see .spec files in the root directory, though. then why add a debian/ directory in the root directory? is it a bad thing we have it there? if its rare? jcater: I can cvs delete the debian/ directory, too. um ? jamest: No. It's just that upstream rarely cares about the packaging. jamest: So it tends to go out of date quite quickly. In this case, we have the advantage in that you not only actively care about it, but have given CVS commit rights to the DD to maintain it. i think our biggest fears at one time were no one knew how to package gnue for debian just because we keep debian rules in packaging/debian, doesn't mean that has any thing to do with release tarballs it just means, we keep the rules versioned and the people that did never shared the knowledge that's what we were after having access to the rules not having them in tarball releases Action: jamest is willing to agree to whatever it takes to keep the .debs flowing oh crap, if you guys are using .msi, then how are we supposed to install gnue in 'wine'?! Access to the rules is relatively easy with apt-get source gnue-FOO it doesn't have InstallShield support yet! dtm: Use winex. =) great now i have to buy TransGaming just to use gnue jbailey: i personally didn't know that .debs contained the rulesets needed to create them when I first requested that we keep them thanks a lot Naw, there's a free version. you taught me that jbailey: winex cvs doesn't support InstallShield like winex3 however i like the idea that it's super easy to create them now that you have it so polished jamest: The debs don't themselves - they're just the binaries. But the source code is always on the same debian server beside them. jamest: Most of the kudos for that go to reinhard. in my ideal universe He's done magic with the distutils stuff. right now we have options to build rpms, tar.gz's from the setup.py i'm blanking at the moment the arg to pass bdist iirc ./setup.py --build-something=tgz,rpm some year it'd rock if distutils allowed ./setup.py --build-something=tgz,rpm,deb It's a bit of craziness though. Noone using debian would ever look for that. README.debain :) but like I said When there's 10,000 packages out there all expecting the word 'debuild' to work, why would someone even look? but you already state it's rare for upstream to care about .debs or have debian/ stored locally Sure. i'll go along with whatever as long as the debs work so how in the world would the expect to be able to go into our source and type builddeb ? except the japanese school girls outfit s/the expect/they expect jcater: They wouldn't at all. Action: jcater is confused by this circular logic i won't wear that jamest: I thought you *liked* me in that outfit. oh, YOU in it that's cool Well, I've got the long hair of the two of us. jcater: They wouldn't expect to be able to.
