Anyone awake and care to talk to me about mysql on Debian (Sarge)? I never have a problem with postgres, but I just can't figure out how to create a user/set passwords etc. (with mysql) The docs in /usr/share/doc/mysql-server don't seem to be quite right. i have notes to make it something like mysql --user=root mysql mysql> INSERT INTO user VALUES('localhost','dimas',PASSWORD('some_pass'), 'Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y','Y'); creates new user then mysql mysql mysql> grant all privileges on *.* to dimas@localhost identified by ''; Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.00 sec) mysql> FLUSH PRIVILEGES; Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.00 sec) mysql> defines permissions i could be wrong, fighting with it each time i use mysql :) dimas: THanks. That looks very familar. dimas: But "mysql --user=root mysql" gives me an "Access denied" message. :( np THat's where I'm stuck. it is where i can't help anymore :( heh Thanks anyway. * dsmith curses mysql yet again :) *** mixi has joined #gnuenterprise dsmith: try "mysql -u root -p" Hey! (I also did a --purge and a re-install) what -p does is that it tells mysql that you have a password for the user that you want to enter * chillywilly thwaps dsmith * dsmith endures under the pressure Does it wirte anythin else than "Access denied" when you try to login with the client * chillywilly uses both mysql and postgres extensively our email backend is mysql ;P postfix + courier + mysql mhe_: Well, the error message has scrolled to far back. + some other shit :P did you use grant statements or hack the mysql databse yourself? dsmith: cant you replicate it? mysql is actually easier to configure, imho, because it is all in the db postgres should steal that ;) mhe_: No, it seems to be workign now. mhe_: I must haev set a password previously or soemthing. dsmith: ok....thats the most important dsmith: so the -p was all you needed After I set the password, yes. But this was failign for me initially: mysqladmin -u root password PASSWORD teh mysql client is alos better because you can connect and then do USE database; It does not force you to choose a db..and you can swicth back and forth *That* was sayign access denied. USE foo; USE bar; But it worked after I re-installed. *** johannesV_ has joined #gnuenterprise also phpmyadmin is better than phppgadmin It's there a way to create a user from the command line? it's all done with grant statements or manually insertions into the mysql db afaik ooh wait mysqladmin tool probably can do it I don't use that thing much As fr as I can tell you cannot, even with mysqladmin http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/mysqladmin.html Title: MySQL Manual | 8.4 mysqladmin, Administering a MySQL Server (at dev.mysql.com) I just use phpmyadmin and fill in the form and insert rows ;P mysql --user=root mysql -p Enter password: ERROR 1045: Access denied for user: 'root@localhost' (Using password: YES) you can use host, db, and user tables Bah! did you set a password for root? *** johannesV has quit IRC intially he has no password Yes I was using it just a minute ago. do an UPDATE on mysql.user table what you can do, is insert an text file with the necessary SQL commands into the mysql client at runtime like "mysql -u root -p FOOBAR < createuser.sql" :P you are entering the wrong password * dsmith tries again * dsmith is embarrased heheh :) *** jamest has joined #gnuenterprise hi jamest *** johannesV_ has quit IRC anyone really using gnue-packages? i can't get base/location/insert-en-country-codes.gsd loaded dimas: no, noone using that it's just a few files kilo converted from old gcd format gsd is trying to load rows like 00000000000000000000002000000001 AF Afghanistan where in loc.gcs class Country defined as -Bjorne Stroustrup, computer science professor, designer of C++ programming language (1950- ) *** dsmith has left #gnuenterprise dimas: sorry, from what I can tell, most of the stuff in the subdirectories of gnue-packages/base is broken and unusable I've started to redo stuff cleanly in gnue-packages/base/base.gcd but I've not gotten very far yet :( how it should be done there? what's the idea? i'd like to test it even from this very early stage dimas: look at base.gcd as an example sigh, will be AFK again for > 24 hrs I hate having no time for gnue :(( see you tomorrow must go :( bye *** reinhard has quit IRC heh *** Amorphous has joined #gnuenterprise *** Amorphous has left #gnuenterprise *** qman has joined #gnuenterprise *** insanekane has joined #gnuenterprise Can i use the GCD parser in the appserver package for my own applications ? or is it meant for use only within the AppServer ? *** lxf has joined #gnuenterprise *** lxf has joined #gnuenterprise *** lxf has quit IRC *** insanekane has quit IRC *** evangineer has joined #gnuenterprise *** evangineer has left #gnuenterprise *** lekma has quit IRC *** mixi^ has joined #gnuenterprise *** mixi has quit IRC *** sjc has joined #gnuenterprise *** holycow has joined #gnuenterprise *** mhe_ has quit IRC *** insanekane has joined #gnuenterprise *** insanekane has quit IRC
