<wkh> hi
<wkh> i want to participate in some kind of open source project (i've never done so before) and gnu enterprise looked good because it's not too mature and it's implemented in a language i like, python. so uh, what are some things people working on right now, and what are some things a new person to the project could work on?
<btami> hi wkh
<wkh> hello.
<btami> first try to install gnue tools
<btami> then checkout it from svn
<btami> and read the code
<btami> play with it
<btami> try to fix something you like
<btami> and you will see... :)
<wkh> ok
<wkh> that sounds reasonable.
<btami> http://www.gnuenterprise.org/developers/involve.php
<wkh> yeah i was reading that
<btami> ok
<wkh> do you contribute to the project? what do you work on?
<btami> maintaining gnue forms win32 ui and win32 packages
<btami> now trying to fix designer bugs
<btami> but i don't suggest to start with designer first
<btami> it's a bit complicated code
<kilo> definitely
<btami> but who knows :)
<btami> what are you interested for ?
<btami> coding, testing, starting business packages ?
<wkh> i agree with the link at /developers/involve.php that if i start a project on my own it'll probably never get past version 0.01 or whatever
<wkh> which is basically useless
<wkh> i like python and i'd like to work on a substantial software project
<wkh> and i'm coming to dislike people who peddle proprietary software >:|
<wkh> has the gnu enterprise stuff ever been used by a small/medium/large business?
<wkh> successfully
<kilo> inhouse apps successful
<wkh> huh?
*** ninja has quit IRC
<kilo> no large apps yet
<kilo> inhouse apps at developers running ok
<wkh> this is going to soudn stupid, but to install, i should first install the tools.. from where?
<wkh> subversion, or downloading some release?
<kilo> what opsys?
<wkh> i'm in ubuntu linux
<wkh> i saw the note about needing python-dev
<ajmitch> apt-get install subversion python-dev
<ajmitch> then..
* ajmitch looks up the public svn url
<ajmitch> svn co http://svn.gnuenterprise.org/gnue/trunk gnue
<wkh> that'll install it?
<wkh> or at least download the stuff
<ajmitch> that'll get the source to look at
<wkh> christ there's lots of code :)
<ajmitch> a reasonable amount
<wkh> should i install the "production installation" or "developer installation" that the README.txt refers to?
<wkh> (i want to hack and contribute, eventually :D)
<ajmitch> developer installation
<wkh> i'm going through the questions setup-cvs.py asks and basically accepting the defaults, i hope that's ok
<btami> yep
<kilo> that's how we do it too :D
<wkh> ok, i think i'm set up. where to begin... :O
*** cyteen has quit IRC
<wkh> i ran setup-cvs.py, can i run the different programs now?
<wkh> or do i need to go into each directory and run setup.py
<btami> no
<btami> setup-cvs.py uses the source .py files
<btami> and creates scripts in your bin dir to start various tools, like
<btami> gfcvs (gnue-forms), gdes (gnue-designer), etc.
<wkh> oooooooh :D
<wkh> right, right
<wkh> gosh, this is a massive project. massive in ambition, at least
<wkh> what's the difference between the reports server and client? do both have to be used in order to generate reports..?
<btami> no
*** cyteen has joined #gnuenterprise
<btami> you can call report server from another box from PHP or any other lang using xmlrpc
<wkh> ah..
<btami> bbl

<wkh> the reporting stuff doesn't look terribly complicated
<wkh> what is the application server and how does it relate to stuff like jboss?
<kilo> -> reinhard
<wkh> :/ what? :(
<wkh> whatever, i'm going to crash for a few hours, hopefully i can wrap my head around this stuff and contribute something useful :D thanks for the help

<btami> can anyone test designer on wx 2.6.x, if my last commit was ok ?
<btami> especially using tools on layout panel toolbar
<btami> testing with other version (2.4.x, 2.5.x) is velcome too

*** jamest has joined #gnuenterprise
<SachaS> not sure if they got around to do that
<SachaS> derek instead of dneighbors
