I get quarterly lists from the USPS of Zip+4 information and Five-Digit info we don't buy the one with latitude/longitude data cant thmm the tiger one has demographics, but not sure if it is address detail or not on geocoding zipsales has something that looks about right, but looks like a windows program and not a database wait... what exactly are you looking to do? I buy two products (there is overlap) One is from the USPS that is just a raw database of zipcodes and zip+4 codes the second is PAVE/CASS software where I feed it an address (or a batch of addresses) and it spits back out a zip+11 code for it and all the info needed to get postal discounts I missed what exactly you're trying to do we have several needs one application we want to use right now is supply it an address and get a latitude/longitude back we then will use that lat/lon to place coordinates on a map and to calculate distances between two addresses another application is we calculate temperatures of shipping destinations to determine what packing material to use TIGER is what you want right now we use weather.com http://www.usps.com/ncsc/addressmgmt/tiger.htm BUT we give it city, st not sure how much it costs and higley, az for example isn't a "real" city if we had lat/lon we could pass that and it would read from nearest weather station so in that instance zipcode lat lon is suffiicent jcater: how did you subscribe to usps stuff? called the customer support center we called them yesterday and they in essence told us they don't sell stuff anymore (but the person we talked to was retarded) National Customer Support Center (NCSC) 1-800-238-3150 that's baloney MelissaData is a big provider of that sort of info too http://www.melissadata.com/zd.html we were looking at melissadata called them they no longer offer their zip11 product you have to use the webservice :( strange wait i might be thinking of different group these guys might have what we need for 1,200 *** ninj1 has quit IRC with tiger would i need to get an additional product as well? tiger is raw data which you could load into a database *** jamest has quit IRC if you just need to get zipcode-level latitude/longitude I'm sure that's all you need if you're trying to standardize an address to get the zip+4 or zip11 code there's no way you want to do that inhouse ? would like to enter 100 W BESTY CT, GILBERT, AZ 85233 and get a lat/lon returned but the latitude/longitude of the center of 85233 would be enough? or you want it more precise than that? not for some of our applications for the weather station example yes for some other examples no say i have 200 kids playing soccer all in the same zipcode and i want to put players on team closest to a coach i have to be finer grained than the zipcode there are a plethora of webservices out there (including a free one from yahoo) that you can get to return this however, doing a query over the wire seems less than optimal yeah well I use aescass.com's product on linux to take an address and return properly coded address with zip+4, etc but it doesn't integrate tiger data but the tiger data is detailed to a zip+4 level best I can tell so I think you could use the two in combination but buying two apps, you're probably talking $2k/yr thats all and that lets us distribute in applications? oh this would be a huge thing to distribute currently the webservices run about 2 cents a transaction so 100,000 transactions and you pay for yourself jcater: we were thinking of having our applications use us as the webservice not distributing per say the database to every client but rather let the clients grab it from us as this has to be millions of rows of data yeah well, the cass product comes on a dvd and the usps data fills a cd that's what I'd do *** btami has joined #gnuenterprise I really like AES it uses a sybase runtime on linux the guys are all engineers I would call them so aes doesnt have geocode and tell thema friend uses their product but he doesn't think they use tiger data and ask * derek was thinking maybe they could provide it all (they might add it) okay will do that when I first bought their software 2 weeks later an actual programmer there called and made sure I installed it okay and talked with me about what we were doing and how they could help w/the initial integration into our software (and this wasn't a sales call to charge us consulting fees... this was something they were just doing to make sure we transitioned okay) iow, I think they are responsive to what people need um i talked to guy for 20 minutes they are VERY interested in doing TIGER stuff and geocoding they want to partner to have us be the first live customer btw: he told me how to get the TIGER data directly from dept of commerce for $99 instead of the couple thousand at usps and he said it is all public domain and only costs $99 for the cd good night all *** reinhard has quit IRC *** btami has quit IRC *** ncjp has quit IRC *** bigbrother has quit IRC *** Amorphous has quit IRC *** btami has joined #gnuenterprise *** ncjp has joined #gnuenterprise *** bigbrother has joined #gnuenterprise *** Amorphous has joined #gnuenterprise *** btami has quit IRC *** sjc has joined #gnuenterprise *** Makki_ has joined #gnuenterprise *** jcater_ has joined #gnuenterprise *** jcater has quit IRC *** Makki has quit IRC *** kilo has joined #gnuenterprise *** derek has quit IRC *** jcater_ has quit IRC *** dneighbors has joined #gnuenterprise *** dneighbors has quit IRC *** kilo has quit IRC *** sjc has quit IRC *** jcater has joined #gnuenterprise *** ninja has joined #gnuenterprise *** jcater_ has joined #gnuenterprise *** jcater has quit IRC *** dneighbors has joined #gnuenterprise *** dneighbors has quit IRC
